According to Japan Consuming reports, the apparel market of Japan is all set to witness an era of growth and steadiness after two years of decline.

Although the apparel sales recorded an incremental growth of 0.4 percent in the fiscal year 2012, a strong growth rate of 5.2 percent was averaged by the top 100 retailers in the market. With such impressive growth rate, market leaders have acquired above 60 percent share of the apparel market. Most of the growth was delivered by the specialty chains but the e-commerce businesses also delivered handsome sales growth in the market.

The fiscal year 2012 was a good year for apparel retail stores in Japan. In spite of recording less than 2.3 percent sales growth of the year before, the market was on path of recovery only for the second time since 2003. The highlights of overall Japanese apparel retailing are as follows:

  • Year on year average sales growth among the top 100 was 5.2 percent, increase of a significant 2.0 points on FY 2011.

  • The real growth came basically from two channels. While e-commerce rose nearly 7.2 percent, specialty retailing recorded 10 percent growth. The general merchandise stores or supermarkets and department stores went down 1 percent on average, indicating greater stability in these channels.
  • Specialty chains dominated the top 10 retailer list of the highest growth. Direct marketers Jupiter Shop Channel and Start Today were also in the list.
  • The top 100 retailers in combine shared more than 63 percent of the apparel market and 48 percent of apparel, accessories and footwear market.

Specialty Chains Dominate but E-Commerce Growing Fast Too

In the last 15 years, the specialty chains have been successfully increasing their market share as an apparel vendor. All the new entrants have infused the sector with new growth, innovation and ideas. There are several new entrants, such as Mash Style Lab, Trinity Arts and F.O. International, in the top 100 rankings.

All the new developments in Japanese retail market say volumes about the presence and influence of Japanese fashion trends on the global platform.

Japanese youths are known for their exceptional fashion sense. Whatever they wear instantly becomes hit in the fashion world and keenly followed by the people all around the world. Teenagers in Japan are extremely fashion conscious and prefer to wear funky apparels with accessories while classical clothing like denim jeans are popular among people of all age groups.

The denim buffs around the world look upon Japanese denim as one of the best and of very high quality whereas Japanese people think of indigenous denim differently. They think highly of American denim and consider it as a real deal. The awesomely crafted Japanese denim does not enjoy the kind of popularity it deserves in the own country.

In the modern times, the rugged and rough jeans have become a real fashion staple. However, middle age Japanese people still prefer to wear clean and elegant design of denim jeans. They do not own a large collection of denim jeans in their wardrobe and a simple pair of jeans is enough for most of them.

The World of Fashion heavily Influenced by Japan

People know Japan by many names and tags. Some know it as ‘The Land of the Rising Sun’, a geographical tag that was given to the country for being the first country to see the sun rise. Many also know Japan as the personification of history, culture, heritage and tradition. Japan is also considered as the technology hub or the technology capital of the world. But besides all of this, people often miss out on the world of Fashion in Japan.

Not many people know this but Japan is not influenced by western trends, in fact, it is the other round. Most of the fashion trends first start in Japan and then is spread across the world. The fashion capitals of the world, Milan, Paris and New York are deeply influenced by Japanese styles and fashion trends. Many European and American fashion designers launch their collections basing it completely on Japan trends.

One huge example of how Japanese fashion trends influence world fashion is camouflage motifs. These motifs first started in Ura-hara before it travelled all over the world. Japanese fashion might not be as famous as European fashion but some of the big names in global fashion are highly influenced by trends set in Japan or even the essence of Japan. One of the most unique Japanese fashion trends that struck UK was a Japanese undergarment called fundoshi. Sharefun released underwear like Japanese Fundoshi in the UK. Many in the UK have tried out the product and found it to be extremely comfortable. The linen that these undergarments are made of is snug and keeps you at ease at all times.

The national outfit of Japan, the Kimono, has also inspired many fashion designers to make shirts, blouses and tops in the same design. Big names in the fashion world like Christian Dior and many more have been inspired by many Japanese fashion trends like the Samurai ensemble. Why even bags have been designed by using the Japanese hair knot style. The main fashion revolution in Japan started in the 80’s. Stalwarts in the world of Japanese fashion, like Issey Miyake, Comme de Garcons and Kohji Kamamoto, brought about the first changes. That revolution was later continued by brands like Kenz, Uniqlo and Muji. Many ‘western’ designers go to Japan to draw inspiration for their new collections. Therefore, western fashion has been heavily influenced by Japanese art and culture.

Set the Trend with Japanese Fashion This Autumn

It is true that Western fashion has dominated the world but again regional influences have their own value. Japanese fashion has a distinguished approach. Japanese fashion imposes a strange mix of the convention and contemporary. Fashionable style of the land of the rising sun is not new. In fact innovative approaches prevail since many centuries.

With the start of the 21st century revolution in fashion trend took place in Japan. A new kind of fashion known as street fashion has arrived and this seeks the attention of the Japanese youth as well as millions of fashion lovers all across the world. The key result of this fashion was the customization of fashion for a complete change. It is the fusion of fashion trends and adoption of different traditions that brought these things into the international limelight.

The present day Japanese fashion is a mix of local and foreign labels and this introduces a new trend. The range of styles varies greatly as well. There is no doubt that the Japanese fashion trend has undergone constant changes in styles over the decades. But, fashion is what keeps on changing according to the likes and preferences of the masses.

Different seasons in Japan witness different kind of wardrobes and fashion trends coming into the limelight. However, irrespective of the season, Japanese fashion styles are known to influence through dark colours and designs that bear a typical architectural richness. When we talk of dark colours then it is the season of autumn where more and more people are seen sporting jackets and trousers of rich and bright colours.

If you love the Japanese fashion trends then you surely will love Stunning Lure’s collections. This collection flaunts a lot of sport wear range. You can go for a rider jacket and team it with a pair of black boots if you love to flaunt sportswear. For the cold and chilly days you can try out patterned cloth from the Japanese fashion trends to lift up your mood. Another common trend in the autumn days is using leather with fur.

To add a unique touch to your wardrobe you can try out Levi’s Made and Crafted long wrap. This really is unique. If you want to go for something bright then you can try out a blue fur coat of Stunning Lure. Again, for trench coat, you can go for Spick and Span’s long trench coat. For knitwear, you can go for Acne’s loose stitched ones.

For your beautiful legs you can try out the T strap pumps. There is a great versatility of colours available as well. With the Japanese fashion trends therefore you can leave too much of an impression and fill, your wardrobe with something that will never get old in terms of fashion.

Japan Explicitly Welcoming the Stylishness of the West for Autumn-Winter collection

Last year’s autumn had witnessed how Japan had welcomed style statements that were chic and wonderful. The autumn winter collection had brought with it one-of-a-kind clothing inspired by the glitz of the west and the simplicity of the east. I had witnessed the eye-catching collection stocked by some of the major fashion stores across Tokyo. They were so tempting that I had effortlessly bagged quite a number of autumn outfits.

While wandering about these shops, I had noticed that a majority of fashion outlets were solely selling autumn winter collection. I was completely floored by the wide range of winter wear sold across Tokyo and other parts of Japan; previously I had noticed trousers and tailored jackets dominantly rule men’s winter wardrobe collection; but last year I was quite surprised to find the same jackets and trousers capture women’s attention. Additionally there were the elderly sporting simple cardigans and pairing their woolens with slipper type shoes.

Being a shopaholic I can’t resist myself from visiting shops; I was completely head over heels for the edgy and wonderful collection offered by Stunning Lure. Most of all the wardrobe collection included everything that looked wearable and beautiful to me. Again!! I could not hold back my temptations as my eye balls started exploring the vivid colours used for the trendy looking sportswear.

As I did a quick go through, I found the autumn collection bear resemblance with previous year’s UK fashion trends. Top shop was selling one of the finest rider jackets for winter; the cool full sleeved upper outfits outwardly spoke of stylishness; though after seeing the price tags I had to quit the idea of bagging a few of those winter wrap-ups. The problem arose when I was trying to find biker wears for a reasonable price. There weren’t any and I was quite heart-broken at it.

While studying last year’s Japanese fashion trend during the winter months, I had chanced upon women wearing patterned clothes that were stylish. The solid colours added to beauty of the patterns. I even found some people sporting clashing patterns; wow!! They all looked incredibly smart in the contrasting designs. Clash patterns are nowadays making quite news in the fashion industry. Fur-wears were also amongst the top choices for japans’ Autumn Winter collection. While some were donning dyed fur, others kept it simple with natural tones. I personally feel that the natural tones add a little more stylishness to the furry attires. Last year’s Autumn-Winter wardrobe collection wooed me quite a lot and I am expecting that this year’s winter season will arrive with even more interesting fashion collections.

What all were “in” During the Autumn in Japan

People in southern hemisphere have started to feel chilly but it’s spring in Japan. The colourful season of spring brings joy and cherry in Japan. Although Japan has moved from the autumn season long ago but if you like to keep track on what all made fashion statement during the months of October and November in Japan, here are few autumn fashion trends amongst Japanese people.

Around the autumn season, garments and accessories stores on Japanese streets stock eye-catching and highly fashionable merchandises.

Tailored jackets along with trousers and blocked hats

Tailored jackets along with trousers and blocked hats are commonly considered by men but in the previous autumn, such stuffs were quite common to see on the Japanese women. The granddad style shoes and cardigans supplemented the style very well. This trend is vastly influenced by British fabrication.

Awesome collections at The Stunning Lure

The Stunning Lure’s collections made several people go crazy over it. Most Japanese people swear by this brand’s name and image. The edgy and individual collections are quite wearable and made it in vogue last autumn. If sporty collections attract you, it’s Stunning Lure’s collection for you.

Topshop offers stylish biker’s jackets
The Topshop had to offer several design of stylish biker’s jackets. Although they can cost you a huge amount of money but worth wearing if you love to ride bikes during the autumn season. Jackets with washed version look were hit amongst the high-speed bikers in Japan. To supplement the look, black boots were quite in fashion.

Mixed pattern was a huge hit in autumn season

And, who said that mixed patterns are no more in vogue? If you take a look at the autumn wardrobe, Japanese beauties will prove you wrong. The dark and cold was almost out of fashion, as most Japanese donned patterned clothes during the autumn season. Many people reasoned that it lifts their mood.

Fur was “in”

If you are into fur, PETA people might have an objection on your fashion sense but Japanese people seemed to be oblivion during autumn season. Clothes in natural dye colours look beautiful but outwears made up of bright fur were also quite in demand.

Simplistic and minimalist look with gold as “add on”

In comparison to the men’s wear, last autumn season was dominated with different designs in the women’s wear segments. Simplistic and minimalist fashion was the highlight of autumn fashion wears in Japan. Black and white seemed to fit perfectly on the chicks and the gold accessories added sophisticated looks.

Long warps were favourite in accessories section

Long warps added a twist to the autumn wardrobe, with many people mixing their clothes with scarf, bags or long cardigan, it seemed that fashion has come of age in Japan.

A Look at Evolving Fashion Trends in Japan

On my last visit to Japan, when I went to photograph some street fashion, I saw that the streets were already filling up with various new fashion trends that were fresh in the year 2013. Whoever still thinks that Japanese fashion is only about kimonos is highly mistaken. Japanese fashion trends are influenced by the ‘west’ but very well moulded to fit the Japanese climate. Some fashion trends are extremely funky while others are a little outlandish.

W all know Japan to be the epitome of culture and heritage but in recent times, Japan has picked up pace and is now moving toe to toe with rest of the fashion world, if not ahead. Japan is a mixture of the old and the new; it is a country where antiquity meets modernity. However, Japanese people are extremely fashion conscious and are always dressed for the occasion.

As summer has almost set in, I saw many women wearing beautiful floral prints. Therefore, this season, if you take a look at the streets of any metropolis in Japan you will find women sporting a lot of floral prints. It could be dresses, shirts or blouses but fancy floral prints are definitely the talk of the town. These summery prints are highly in demand.

Japanese fashion trends change every season much like fashion trends in any other country. The Japanese follow trends prevalent in all the fashion capitals of the world. So, don’t be stunned to see the trends of New York, Paris and Milan being sported by the people of Japan. If we talk about fashion trends, we can’t really leave out hairstyles, now can we? I saw a lot of women especially teenagers and girls in their early twenties, sport pretty hairstyles with wonderful accessories. I even saw some with simple plaits but gorgeous accessories. Some even sported OTT (Over the Top) accessories and yet carried them off beautifully.
Another very interesting and eye-catching theme I saw parading the streets of Japan was the cat-woman theme. Everything from headgear to footwear has a very cute cat style look. I saw girls sport caps with cat ears on them, skirts with ‘whiskers’ printed, et al. This trend is definitely growing in Japan and might be a huge hit this season.
